“Reels of Tape” (c) 1982 MSK
Reels of tape feel no pain
Watch the movie over again.
Life pours past the flags unfurled
Crack the crystal paralyzed world.
CHORUS: I’ve been told if you live in the future,
You’ll be who you wanna be.
But I ain’t moving to San Francisco
‘Til it drops into the sea.
Careful surgeons with knives of rust
Open wounds of crimson lust.
Forget today and tomorrow.
Leave this song behind, and all it’s sorrow.
CHORUS: I’ve been told if you live in the future,
You’ll be who you wanna be.
But I ain’t moving to San Francisco
‘Til it drops into the sea.
First things first, but think about it twice.
Follow those who take their own advice.
Wasn’t trying any other time.
I’d walk away mumbling a Few Shattered Lines.
CHORUS: I’ve been told if you live in the future,
You’ll be who you wanna be.
But I ain’t moving to San Francisco
‘Til it drops into the sea.
Reels of tape feel no pain
Watch the movie over again.
Life pours past the flags unfurled
Crack the crystal paralyzed world.

This is one of the original acoustic tunes that’s featured on my new album “Dark Energy.” You can find it on ITunes or CD Baby under Michael S. Kennedy.
This is beautiful. I use to write poetry alot. I haven’t done that in a while and have been meaning to. At any rate, blogging is filling a tiny hole in my soul 🙂

i appreciate that a lot. Poetry is so powerful I hope you do continue. My poems have transformed more closely to lyric form, but I still cling to my roots! Blogging gives us access to an amazing community of people with an astounding array of talent. Hopefully the tiny hole will not be there for long.

Like much of your writing, this is so evocative. Quite ephemeral, and beautiful. Well done, bro!

Very cool. In this one, I started with fragments from Casey. While he was not writing lyrics he gets co authorship on this one! Like the ones we put together. Combining ideas and vibes to make something great. Thanks!

Howdy! I have listened to the links you sent. I like to listen to a new song a few times before I form any opinions. My music takes time to adjust to, so I try not to rush. Early impressions; Good raw talent. Right feeling and mood. I am very picky about tuning instruments and it seemed out of tune. After that it is practice and performing live to polish the the final song/mix. I will listen to this one a few times as well. Keep sharing.

Would you ever consider updating the lyrics of a song like this? I mean the reels of tape. I don’t know the technology well enough to suggest an alternative. I noticed the other parts of the refrian are quote timely. Like SF sinking (or rather the oceans rising) and, while I’m not well versed on the drug culture, the line, “Crack the crystal paralyzed world.” seems to have an added meaning these days. I really like the sound of this one, MM.

Curious! While I am admittedly very strict when it comes to the lyrics, you have a good point. These songs were written in different times and many of the references are no longer applicable or misleading. I never thought of the drug relationship to the line about the crystal paralyzed world making that connection!!!! That is NOT what this was about when written. so the answer in this case is YES. Recording direct-to-disc does not have the same ‘romantic ring’ to it like reels of tape, but there has to be a modern romantic equivalent. Thank you for the post and comment! Great observations, I told you you were good at this!

Thanks MM. And I did know it wasn’t about drugs, but it’s cool when words can have multiple meanings. English is such a cool, comfusing, fun language. :o)

I am not sure who uses/abuses the English language more…… lawyers, politicians or poets!

Ouch – that’s some bad company, lol.

Ha! Words can be a double-edged sword, but poets usually keep things from getting too ugly.

I was just going for the laugh when I said that. Poets can twist, torture and abuse and use the language to their advantage along with the best (or worst) of them.

Understood. Absolutely true! WE want to think we have a ‘gentler’ way of making the point!
