It may take a few times through listening to this one.  A number of my songs might seem quite alien at first.  I hope you let them grow on you.  (OK, that sounded kinda creepy LOL!) This is a textured song where I did all the sequencing and drum programming.  There are no guitars on this song.  Most of this is Atari days using the Proteus 1 tone generator an the RX 15 drum machine.  I also use sounds straight from the keyboard(s) I use as controllers.   In this case it is the Korg Trinity V3.  Other than the vocals, everything is recorded via MIDI and plays back live sounds from the keyboards and tone generators (along with effects and other goodies).   From start to finish this is a dark piece.  Sparse percussion with a rolling sequenced bass line.  You have heard my wife before on “All Night Long” and “What I do at Night” and this is another one of her gems.  The intro and break vocals are from Phyllis Ann, who toured with The Personal Touch and sang on “The Touch” and “Our Bodies Move.”   As the song begins I try to use multiple melody lines in various instrument voicings to lay the chordal structure.  Plucky guitar sounds come from the Korg.  Slow trance – lulling you closer.   Then the message; “Who’s Following You?”.  But the subject quickly settles on the main issue; death.  Too many of us are waiting for that dream.

“It’s Easy to Die” (@) MSK 1990

I wonder, I wonder who

Who, is following you.

It’s easy to die

You just close your eyes.

And then once the dream begins

It will never end. My friend.

Don’t put up a fight

Just follow the light.

It’s not too hard

And once the dream begins

It will never end.

Chorus:

It’s easy to turn

Your life into lies. My friend

And once the dream begins

It will never end.

This did not take time to grow on me! Definitely mood music, but I seem to be in the right sort of mood… Thank you…

That is good to hear. I guess in some ways I am still back a few decades where this style of music was really ‘out there’! Now-a-days I guess it is less alien than when I first wrote and recorded them. Thank you oh so much for your comment, and you are very welcome!

This is a great song. Definitely dark, but great nonetheless. I like how you can kind of feel the the song seeping into you as you’re carried away by the melody. The vocals are haunting too. Perfect for this song. I love the lyrics as well. As a writer, I’m concentrate a lot on the words to a song. Don’t get the wrong idea, I can listen to music just for fun, but I enjoy something with meaning, a little meat to it. Especially in today’s world where there is, in my opinion, a lot of…meaningless (I think that’s the right word) lyrics (which seem to be mostly in “pop songs”). But enough about all that…sorry. This is wonderful and I thank you for sharing! And if I can just add one more side note…it’s almost ironic that you posted a song about death when another guy I know just released an EP where 4 of the 6 tracks deal with the idea of death in one form or another. Anyway, as always, thanks for a great post!

I appreciate your thoughts. I also enjoy music greatly, but if the lyrics are mundane or shallow and meatless to your point, I just can’t enjoy the music as much. i am so tired of cookie cutter boy meets and then gets dumped by girl lyrics…. So my songs have a tendency to push the envelope for ‘standard’ commercial songs. You are wonderful and I am glad to know you better.

That is golden for me. I am a poet at heart and the lyrics are as important to me as the music. When the two fit together just right it can make a powerful message. Let them sleep! There is plenty of time and feel free to visit any time. I truly appreciate your comments – you made my day!

Mike’s 1990 composition suggests death = eternal dream. The music is eerie and the words paint the scene. For a visual elaboration, fast forward to the epic animation film “Waking Life.”

I couldn’t be more serious. The film “Waking Life” will unveil the full dimensions of lucid dreaming and death.

  9. Hey Mike, because of your description I expected a dark and gloomy song. I was quite surprised when I listened to your song because I don’t find it gloomy at all, okay, the lyrics are, but the music is almost happy to my ears. Please don’t take it personal because it’s still a great song 🙂
As a metal fan of all sorts I’m used to dark, depressive music, maybe that’s why your song sounds so happy to me.

Lol! Maybe I should go back to marketing class! I am not very good at naming my songs and maybe I am NOT good at describing them either lol! You are also correct. The music is rather light themed. While the lyrics are the opposite. Some comments say that this blows them into listening to the song! Thank you very much for your time and your thoughts.

      • The mixture is really strange indeed (in a good way) 🙂
I don’t think you should go back to marketing class because music is mostly about feelings. So when the song is dark and depressing for you I don’t see any reason to not describe it as such.

I am glad to hear that – and I never went to Marketing Class so I would hate to start now!!! I take your observation to heart. Much appreciated!

These would definitely have to grow on me, but I think that’s just because I’m not a hardcore rock fan to begin with. I do enjoy “Slick as a dream” and “Lack of concern” on first listen, though. Keep on keeping on in your musical journey.

I appreciate that you understand listening to music outside your normal styles. I try to introduce a number of songs here that are not familiar to some. Other songs are very similar to familiar styles, I appreciate you listening and if one song seems a little ‘out there’, please drop by and pick another one. Thank you for the encouragement and for the comments!
