Encouragement – the action of giving someone support, confidence, or hope.
This also applies to writers, artists, poets, performers, photographers and so on… Let’s build each other up instead of competing with one another. Once you’ve reached the next level, reach down and lend a hand to everyone still striving to get where you are. Be thankful to each and every person who encourages you and GO OUT OF YOUR WAY to support and encourage others.

I agree! Great words, and so succinctly written. I think the most successful artists do this, which lends to their popularity, which hopefully, in some small way, keeps them creative and giving to their fans (which include other artists!). Thanks for sharing 🙂

We were so lucky. We had a community of song writers that really supported each other. Tom and Mark, and Bob, and Ed, and Tam { Focus on Your Feet } et. al. It really made things much easier to have a community!

In so many ways we created a great environment. There was luck, but a lot of intention behind it. It still would have been nice if someone who “made it” would have seen us and given us a boost a few decades ago LOL!

Well said. I love you comment about people who’ve made it telling themselves and others the story they did it all by themselves. Do you think it’s human nature?

I appreciate your comment. Not claiming any expertise, but I would say based on my experience it is root human nature. Just like pain and suffering during an injury (or best example is pregnancy) we tend to forget the real level of pain or discomfort as time goes on. So after a while for them, ‘it was easy!’ while we might still be struggling or managing.

That was my strategy too! That is why I love running sound and recording/mixing in the studio. I am not the player many of my friends are, but I can make them sound great! LOL

this really speaks to me heavily and I wholeheartedly agree with you. i’d hung around another who played guitar, but he just wouldn’t take the time. i’ll let you read into that. I’ve learned it mostly all on my own, but a few months ago I did take a few guitar lessons and it did help. writing is where i’m stronger at. the guitar more of a hobby, but it’s my favorite instrument. I admit the electric guitar is more my preference due to it’s easier on the fingers.

The thing is it doesn’t take a lot to help someone. For the most part as you say with a few lessons and tips you got better and will hopefully keep going. I find the guitar is a great songwriting tool. Thanks for the comment!

Couldn’t agree more,something the many show ponies in higher section brass bands should read, digest and put into practice, as a mere novice in the banding world I have had my eyes opened. ‘Oh you’re only in a 4th section band’ and other disparaging comments abound, thankfully I can rise above it and state in response ‘I’m not the best in the world but I love what I do, who I play with and I wouldn’t leave my band for yours for all the coffee beans in Kenya, and when I do become the best your band still wouldn’t be on my list.’ My band members are fantastic, they support, encourage and we all help each other out, we play because we love it not because we want our name on the next Championship trophy, our trophies are the response we get from our audience at our concerts….far better than a bit of brass in the shape of a shield or a cup on display in a bandroom 🙂

This is exactly where the tradition of competition runs head-on into art. It is not like a game or battle where you put down the opponents every opportunity you have and use every advantage you can to defeat them at all costs. Not every sports player wants to go pro; they just love the sport and getting together with friends. There are benefits to competition, but not when it comes to crushing or even discouraging true passion for the activity. Thank you and I am really glad to hear you talk about your loyalty to your band and the support you receive. Now forgive the others because they may not know what you really have and they may never.

This is great advice. It’s especially true for amateur musicians. Professionals have their performance reviews and nightly applause for encouragement, but amateurs don’t have that. As an amateur flute player, simple, kindhearted encouragement means a lot to me.

We all need encouragement. There is enough criticism in this world. It seems to me people are more interested in tearing each other down than building them up. Thanks for sharing this.

I believe we do need feedback, positive or negative. But encouragement can be an incredible motivator as you know. Like the moth to the flame and all that, we naturally look at the traffic accident or the natural disaster, etc. A teacher or policeman doing a great job will often go unnoticed by the general public.
