“Criminal” © MSK 9-4-2013
Got some extra cash, future looks grand
Give my girl a call and make some plans.
Working hard and things are going great
Take her out on the town and celebrate.
After dinner we take in a show
Meet some old friends that wanna go.
Hangin out, talking a little shop
When all of a sudden we see the cop.
Busted for possession of a little pot
They threw us in jail and left us to rot.
Took pictures and prints and after one call
Each one of us became a criminal.
Cancer started early and spread so fast
Time is measured in pain, not weeks that have passed.
Morning to night alone and feeling ill
Insurance companies refused to help pay the bill.
Not born to money, fame or wealth
Struggling just to maintain her health.
No medications working at this point
But she finds relief by smoking a joint.
Busted for buying from an undercover cop
They threw her in a cell and left her to rot.
Ridiculous penalties for a ridiculous law
We just turned her into a criminal.
No addiction, violence or inability to think
Nothing compared to meth, coke or a few drinks.
I just find it bordering psychotic
To punish marijuana use like a narcotic.
Laws often made of bribes and cash
Make it illegal to keep a private stash.
Politicians, drug-lords and all of their friends
Hope this money making game never ends.
Love it! Ridiculous law ideed! Fight the power! Freedom is coming!

Thank you so much. Freedom for many is on the way.

I remember years ago you got a summons, before they changed the law.

Time for another change, but hopefully in the right direction.

Powerful presentation of a well thought out argument.

That was really cool of you. I think it is a story we should be challenging. Sometimes the ‘new plan’ sounds great and has the right goal, but others can be misguided from the start.

What a sad story. So glad more states are legalizing marijuana.

Agreed. I heard it over and over. The tide is moving rapidly now, but it could swing back, too.

I suppose that’s something to consider.

A sad state of affairs that is all too common in many places in North America. Great piece!

It really is. So much tragedy when the ‘facts’ are so distorted. WE have a lot to learn. Thank you so much!

The law is an ass!
There are so many who find this useful for pain. I am taking the oil at the moment and it has worked to a certain degree. Good topic which always rears it’s head.
Thanks as usual for liking my poem.

Ha! Well said! Being illegal is one thing, but hopefully the punishment will be discussed and made more realistic. Ugly head! Sure thing.

I just won’t try to understand these people as there are worse things floating around out there!

I used to be against its usage for medical purposes, but after the research and really trying to understand the issues better I’ve totally changed my position. Very simple reasoning, it works and the comparison between pot deaths and prescription meds deaths is astounding. Well too, I grew up with hippies in the family lol.

Good for you! Keeping an open mind is what makes all of us great, healthy and wise lol. It is hard to understand what we do not see or need…… if you can do that with the other person’s position, you will change. I think we all had hippies in the family Ha! Thank you.

Jail for marijuana, meanwhile the real criminals are roaming freely in the streets (criminals=politicians)

Understood. A lot of politicians try. I know many that start with great intentions. I guess it becomes overwhelming.

Has this been set to music, or will it be? (Other than maybe the title) I think it would work well.

I have no music arrangement for this yet. This has been sitting around for a while! Thank you, I know I am not the best at naming my pieces!

No offense, it’s a fine blot post title. So, what usually comes first, the words or the tune?

Understood! There are no rules. If you have one, the other is a lot easier to create LOL. Many times the music will inspire the words and they literally ‘fall into place’. Having lyrics first sets up the ‘rules or frame’ for the music.

Just wondering, as writing music is such a foreign place for me.

Understood! I write lyrics (that start off as poetry sometimes) all the time, but i also have musical themes or motifs running in my head all the time. Every once in a while I sit down and put a few together. It sounds easy but there is a lot of tweaking and adjusting and re-thinking what you thought was great at the time!

It doesn’t sound easy at all, lol.

Vivid pictures of real life people hurt by irrational drug laws. Inspiring lyrics and no better time to publicize them.

Thank you! I just hope the political inertia in that direction continues. We hoped this would no longer be an issue decades ago!

I’m not sure if this is the place for this comment, and if so pls delete after you read, but a title like “Criminal” or “It’s Criminal” could refer to both the the fact that pot is not leagalized in most places, and that the legal status and penalties are criminal. Just a thought.

I am a week behind and many apologies as I work through the windows 10 upgrade that had a small issue…. You are very welcome. In Ohio we vote tomorrow to pass or reject a law legalizing but with some unnecessary stuff thrown in to make some people rich. Every one wants a piece of that pie! Thank you and always good to hear from you!
