I would like to post another set of pictures from a Maui trip years ago. It reminds me again of the power and force nature puts behind everything on this planet. As an observer, viewer or bystander, we sometimes miss the true impact. But when you are in its presence the impressions can be astounding. My wife and are were standing on our porch a few nights ago watching a lightning storm pass over our house. Heavy rain at times kept us close to the house. We watched the storm move – pointing out lightning strikes and the strength of related thunder We noted of their distance. I had just said something about bolts traveling a good distance before going to ground as the last distant thunder receded.
As we looked in the direction of the storm, we were both immediately jettisoned into hyper-awareness as a bright ball flared and jumped between the rain clouds and a huge oak tree in our yard. We were frozen by a sound I cannot describe and the combined impact of thunder and electricity so close to us. It looked like the massive trunk of the tree pulsed or absorbed the bolt. The next day we saw long strips of bark blasted out in front of the tree, which otherwise continues to appear as if it was not affected at all. I wish I had my camera at the time but the odds are poor and it would not describe the event. Our ears were ringing for a along time.
These pictures also try to show you the force behind the waves hitting the rough coast line. Caves and then chimneys are created over the eons as water blasts against the walls of the cave and the resulting giant water gun looks like a geyser spouting out of the rock. From above, I thought the water was inviting and almost gentle. As I stood on the top of the cave next to the chimney spout, it was calm and peaceful and I let my guard down. Every rock and terrace suddenly underwater created a wide pool, with a huge drain in the middle! Difficult to show in pictures or describe here, but when a strong wave hit inside those cave walls It forced a small lake of water up in the air directly above me. As it returned to earth with me in its path, it rose from a stream to a tidal wave and I barely had time to crouch down and get a good solid stance. It almost toppled me over and for all I know could have washed me back into the blow hole or over a wall that might as well have been to oblivion!
Pictures can only remind us of that power. Predictable and gentle events are mild and you can prepare for them, and learn.
Scary!

It was. I was perfectly calm until the water was so thick I could not breathe and the weight started building up. But it was sooooooo coool to be there. Hard to explain. Thank you!

Great post! Thanks for reminding us of the power and beauty of nature! And yes, it’s very possible that it could’ve knocked you down and washed you out. I don’t believe we always think of something as light as water to be so powerful…but I’m reminded of this fact every time I paddle out to surf. Experiencing the forces of nature can be some of the greatest moments not only because they serve as reminders of its power, but beauty as well. Thanks for sharing! Love the pictures too!

Great! I need the reminders as much as anyone! We think we have strength and we hope we can react correctly when the time comes but often there is no practice time! While surfing, you can practice and get better and then you can enjoy the scenery and beauty without focusing your attention on staying on the board! I am not a surfer, but to me it is so fascinating. Photos I have seen of being in the tube are just gorgeous! I will have to lean on your experience for more than pictures can provide.

I’m not good enough or brave enough just yet to try going through a barrel. Ha! But it’s almost an indescribably feeling having the force of the water push you and propel you toward the shore…and a truly wonderful and freeing feeling at the same time. Nature is simply amazing.

I am sure you can handle it! I am one of those people that can swim, but if i don’t paddle hard and heavy i sing to the bottom! I can literally sit at the bottom of a pool and not move at all. Family and friend can sleep while floating! I would not do well, but I will share your impressions. Riding the waves is as cool to me (and as unattainable) as riding the wind! Awesome.

Love that last line! – “Riding the waves is as cool to me (and as unattainable) as riding the wind!” It truly is quite the experience and anytime I paddle out I’d be more then happy to share those thoughts/that experience with you in a post.

I am counting on it! I am going to go get a wet suit so I can pretend virtual reality!

Me too! I would be willing to go back again and again. I will share more pictures soon. And there is usually a story behind them!

Nature is amazing and can sometimes be a real threat.

Indeed. In both cases things could have been quite different. I could have ended up in the ocean or we could have been hit directly by the bolt. Either way, it does not stop me from the experience!

True. I had no idea. Looking from a distance it was so deceptive. Almost foolish thinking back on it. ……..but I have done a number of foolish things!

Thank you! I think so too every time I look at them. Not sure if I would do that again, but it was thrilling. Any time, glad to hear it.

That was my wife again. Good thing I didn’t end up in the ocean as this would have been the last picture of me LOL!!

Great photos! You are brave to go out there. Yes I too am amazed by mother nature. I am in awe of waves at the beach. You can feel the power when they hit you, and they scare me too. I don’t like the feeling of not having control. That’s some story about the lightening. It reminds me of when I was a kid. Every time there was a storm my dad and I sat on the porch while my mom yelled to come inside!

Thank you! I often blur ‘brave and stupid’, but I am still alive, so I guess I am ahead of the game. That is so funny. I often exposed my kids to as much as I could in a safe environment and they loved it, but it caused a bit of stress to others!

I walk that line too….it’s just too boring no to.

Agreed. I have learned so much more from those ‘risky’ experiences but even at my age I continue to know the value of walking that line. How is guitar practice going? Building up those callouses?

We are learning chords, and I have callouses after my lesson, which go away,bc I am not practicing:( I plan to practice now and tomorrow. But first I have to cut my nails; my daughter says they should always be cut and ready!

I practiced yesterday and I actually had fun!

That is the key. If you can, practice every day even for 10-15 minutes. Have fun each time and then when you can dig in for longer practice sessions and work at it over and over. My formula for fun, if not success!

I usually get good advice after I do something stupid! It seemed like a good idea at the time LOL.

The power of nature always amazes me too! Speaking of Hawaii, standing next to lava pouring into the sea is another example. That sound!

I missed the island with an active volcano when I was there but would love to see and HEAR that! Thank you.

Whoah. It’s experiences like this that convince some people not to rationalize nature, but just to stand in awe of it, gaping. Cool pics. I love stories like this lol!

I stand in awe, but that time it almost knocked me down! Thank you. Much appreciated!
