I have been a bit distracted lately. I have a computer at home that I use to record music and to create the sounds I use with the MIDI controllers. That is all I use it for. I update the recording software and the plug-ins that I use, but other than that I have not done any updates since I got everything working reasonably well. I subscribe to; don’t fix it if it ain’t broke……..
My office computer is another story. I keep it up to date – within reason – and I try to get all the current drivers, etc. I use it for everything you use a computer for including playing my audio mixes and working on videos. So I recently upgraded to Windows 10.
Immediately I could not play audio files or video clips with attached audio. Nothing changed on the sound card and it shows everything working properly. Try to play an audio or video file though and the music player crashes. I gave Windows some feedback. I am dead in the water. Almost a month ago I got another update (I am checking daily if not more often for an update that will fix this bug) and it worked. No problem playing audio or videos.
Two days later no audio again. I sent more feedback and no helpful response in return. Not unexpected. I work for a company that uses software updates for our products and I understand how a few can be affected but almost everyone else does not have an issue or problem. Things are very complex these days and even though devices and programs are GENERALLY easier to use, they are dependent on so many other factors and variables. I go through the trouble to Reset Windows 10 and install all my programs again. Still no audio. A few days ago there is an update and I can again play audio. Last weekend I was playing music all the time in celebration (yeah, I was in a kind of ‘cold turkey’ for you more senior readers….).
Today I log in and no audio again! ARRRGHH! I try to be patient but I think I am ready to trade my Windows 10 in for my old Windows 7! Sometimes it’s all a numbers game.
I know what your saying, I wont upgrade to El Capitain on Mac for similar reasons. I need the upgrade for certain things but Pro Tools and Kontakt are still having issues with the new software, so I’m sticking with what I have! Pardon the pun but your situation “sounds” frustrating to say the least!

It is an unfortunate dilemma…. we want to keep up to date and use the new features, but too often one thing gets better but other features get lost, changed or hidden! Pro Tools is tricky and keeping it consistent is difficult with all the updates. I never hated ‘the sounds of silence’ before!

Mike and Chris have both done the updates, my instinct was to stick with 7, and I’m glad. I was too lazy to get used to a new driver.

For most people I am sure it is fine. There are new features that make it cool, but unless I can play music and videos, they don’t mean much!

Most people are OK and doing fine with the upgrade. There have been different issues than mine, but still a lot of people will be very happy with Win 10. On the other hand – – – – – I wish I had NOT upgraded at this point.

I don’t think 10 will be worse than 8 from what I hear!!! You might want to risk it.

I share the pain! There could be many reasons, however, one thing comes to my mind when I had W7. I upgraded Adobe Flash and I lost all audio. I reverted back and I was fine. Check it! It’s worth a try. I have W8 and I want to go to W10 but I can’t because I work from home and my job says their programs are not ready to support it! Ugh!

Good ideas. I still have to learn Win 10 a little bit better. Once I feel comfortable and they do not fix it by then – I will revert. Sometimes we are trapped between work and home systems. At least you do get to work from home. Ha. Thank you for the comment and sympathy!

I hear you. I keep ignoring all update notices. Once I updated and lost everything. Once I updated itunes and my cd drive stopped working! I bring it to best buy and they tell me it stopped working bc I updated itunes!!! 😬 What kinda sense is that? They said there’s some bug between apple and iTunes on a PC.
So now my daughter got the iPhone 6s and when she tries to upload music it says she needs to update itunes. I won’t do it. I’m afraid of the unknown. I could lose my library. I thought updates were supposed to be helpful. They seem to always mess things up. I can’t imagine how frustrated you are after all that. I have windows 7 and I keep getting prodded to update to windows 10.
I’m not doing it. My brother is a cyber security expert so he’s going to come over and do it. Good luck!!!

In all fairness, I do think it is better to keep current with updates and new software. I normally do not update so soon. I like to wait and see before I jump into it, but I do not wait very long. And most people are fine. I just should have waited. Come to think of it, I am waiting! Do regular back-ups, both of PC and phone whenever possible. The cloud can help there, but it will have updates in the future as well LOL. Our IT guy at work did not have any additional suggestions but I would still have your brother do it if you can! Good luck!

Not yet. When I do, I think I will stop updates for a while until they get this figured out.

Can you stop the updates? Mine keeps popping up the schedule to update. I ignored it a few times and now it tells me “Last Chance”, my PC will be restarted and new update will be installed regardless.

I think you can stop them from updating automatically…… Still getting used to Win 10. Options have different names for things I was familiar with LOL. I was hoping once it worked again I could stop updates so I better check into that now!

Gosh Mike, my house rocks better when everyone has their computer up and running with no issues. Husband “swears” by solid 7. Even ordered me a laptop with Windows 7 because he was concerned I would be out somewhere and have trouble:) I ordered him a small tablet/pad with Windows 8 so we could keep ahead of the curve. Husband HATED Windows 8, but with MUCH persistence figured it out. Recently updated Windows 10 on his tablet, likes it compared to 8, but as a family, we all are holding off for a bit on our “main” computers. No one wants to go first!! Ha,ha!! If something were to go wrong, we Hate “cold turkey” in our house! Hope Windows 10 gets you back up and running soon!!

Win 10 had got to be better than 8, and if/when it works for me I will have more time to play with new features! right now all I want to do is play music and videos…… I can understand not wanting to go first LOL!

I upgraded from 8 to 10, so love 10 by comparison, but there are definitely days I feel nostalgic for 7. Windows is building less and less into the OS by default and pushing more and more 3rd party software. To one end, that gives you more flexibility, but to the other, more problems, because Microsoft is making less and less of the software that makes the machine work, so have less and less ability to help anyone with it. Definitely a mixed bag, at best.
Off the cuff, it sounds like maybe your sound drivers got frigged over in the upgrade. If you can figure out how to update or reinstall them, it might resolve the issue. But, it’s Windows, so really all you can do is work from the most likely problem down to the least likely and cross your fingers.
So many of the problems we’re having with tech in recent years is related to our sales-driven society – the idea if a thing isn’t making someone rich, obviously we’re doing it wrong. Each new system upgrade drives that more home, and I find I drop more and more default programs. I don’t even use their recommended microphone software anymore, due to the limits they’ve inflicted on it to get you to pay for something else. I’m choosing more and more freeware, so their diabolical plan is clearly backfiring.
Good luck getting to the bottom of the audio issue, though.

The automatic update is a thing they might want to revert later on, since it gives these kinds of problems. I have lots of machines I never update until something breaks.
I had a similar issue with audio crashing, but every time the troubleshooter could just restart the Audio Service, and it worked again. Some people seem to have good results by changing the output frequency (say from 44,1kHz/16 bit to 48kHz/24-bit).
Currently my audio seems fine again, probably a mysterious update. You can always try to install the company’s (RealTek?) own drivers. Not sure whether MS will ruthlessly overwrite such installs. If so, that’s one feature of Win10 I wouldn’t like; it’s heading for trouble if it is.

I read somewhere the other day that if you don’t like 10 you have 30 days to revert back to 7 or 8. Typical with all new OS’s you should what until the first patch comes out before installing anything. Look at Windows 8 compared to 8.1 Microsoft is trying to get the bad taste of 8 out of ever bodies mind by “giving” us 10. To me your music being available is much more important then any special features a OS offers.

I found that as well researching how to downgrade. The problem for me was it has been fixed twice with updates, only to break again with the next update. Had I known it would take this long I would have done it much earlier. Agreed!

Howdy! Like a friend of mine says, ‘you can’t live without them and you can’t shoot them’! I am a geek in many ways and really love technology, but being a user and not a programmer, I am often frustrated when things that should work – do not! Thank you and good to hear from you as always. Thanks!

Midimike, have you ever looked into any of the Linux distributions? They offer systems for every thing you can think of from simple basics to complicated programming. There is one solely for media playback. I’ve been using Linux Mint for several years now and don’t feel any desire to look through another Windows. This quote says it all, “In a world without walls and fences who needs Gates and Windows?”

I sympathize. The free upgrade to Windows 10 pops up every time I put my computer on and I delete it every time as I don’t wish to lose the audio/video programs I purchased and all the creativity I’ve put into them. You have just confirmed my intuition about this. All the best to you!

I got another update over the weekend and my audio works again. I tried to turn off updates but did not see an easy way to do that….. other than disconnecting from the internet! There was another update yesterday and I am dreading seeing what happens tonight. Keep in touch!

Hey Midmike:) My husband, who does know his way around the computer “keyboard”, recently “restored” his computer back to Windows 7. After attempting to use Windows 10 on his “older” computer, he experienced problems with some of this programs; as well as, taking longer to execute anything he tried to do. He was disappointed to have to go back to Windows 7, because he really likes Windows 10 on his newer tablet. With that said, I’m thinking you had troubles because of this reason too. So I guess, both you guys need to pencil in an “upgrade” on your Christmas list. Christmas list for what year…well, it sounds like we’re all from the “lay’d back” and let’s thinking on this for a bit, generation, we’ll just wait a bit, and see what comes up new around here next year! Happy Thanksgiving Mike to you and your family! denise

That could be the end of this story. Over this week I had an update and everything worked fine again. Tow days later another update and audio stopped playing again. immediately I looked for another software update (I do this almost every day when it is not working) and amazingly, there was another update. I did that immediately and audio works again! I feel like a ping-pong ball LOL! Happy Friday and Happy Thanksgiving!
