Forward or Back? Happy 2016!

I have my own thoughts on the New Year’s holiday and the events surrounding it.  Before I go off on my tangent, let me first tell you that I think the whole thing is confusing and misleading.  So many people start off turned around because it does not make sense.

If you think of beginnings, fresh starts, separation of seasons, then we should start the New Year on the same day as the First Day of Spring.  One of those equinox thingys that will happen again in March.  http://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/march-equinox.html.  Winter: most things die or transform, only to jump back bigger and stronger every year.  To me this makes the way we look at nature, the seasons and the planet/sun relationships all make a bit more sense.   But here we are.  A New Year for many.

Is this a time of reflection on the year that was or are we better served looking forward to improving – growing – learning to do better in the coming year(s)?

I always try to learn from my mistakes and to change processes (or attitude, as needed!) to reflect successes.  Going over past injuries from ‘blind-spots” has limited positive potential for me.  I would rather look for the future blind-spots knowing that fixing the last year failure does not guarantee seeing the traps presented in the year to come, then prepare to take advantage of opportunities.

Do you reflect on the close of each year?  Make resolutions you should have already done? Guarantee to do better?  Or just have another day to party? LOL

Much success and happiness to all of you and your extended family and friends.  Be safe in the coming months and help make your community better for all.

  3. New Years Day is just another day for me. It’s majors sense to think of the spring as a time for new beginnings. Either way, hope all your new beginnings are good beginnings!

Thank you and I apologize for the delay in responding. It is that time of year! Sometimes the way we look at things can change our actions dramatically even if we are not aware of the cause. Have a Great New Year!

  6. As I was saying to another today, I resolve to resolve. A resolution to me is static. “I will read ten books this year.” “I will lost five pounds.” A resolve to resolve is a commitment to taking action day as if it were the beginning of the new year. This means to reflect on what has been, to see where one is, and where one is going, to make the changes and choices necessary to go down the path one desires mindfully and with commitment (always knowing one might be going down the wrong path).

Yet it is good that there is a communal event, when we experience together something similar that we can talk about across the miles and borders. I’m with you, it should be the spring equinox, but that would make us all pagans and heathens they would say. 😉

I agree with you. It’s just another example of a holiday being blown our of proportion and setting people up for failure. I begin again any time during the year. I used to set goals in every area of my life since my 20s. For the past few years, I choose a theme and 5 goals. My theme last year was authenticity. This year it is acceptance. And my goals are:
    Grow spiritually
    Parent calmer
    Accept self
    Volunteer
    Read my books
These things benefit me and others. At 47 I workout and take care of myself, so those days of lose weight are over. What a relief!
I do look at last year’s 5 goals and I’m happy to say 4 were done and one is a work in progress. I’m glad the holidays are over. I put away all my Christmas crap and life is back to normal. But yes, there is too much pressure on nye, especially for single people with nobody to kiss. I was part of a winter solstice ceremony and we set intentions and burned them to the cardinal directions and earth. Well I hope 2016 brings you more of what you love for you and your family.

I feel like I snuck into 2016 under the fence, like a subtle gate crash to an event I was already invited to, but couldn’t get to on time.

I haven’t done New Years Resolutions since…. primary school, where it was compulsory to make and submit them, for some unknown reason.

I tried to reflect, then realised I couldn’t remember much of 20!5.
Now I’m looking to 2016 with stoic resolved.

  11. Ah, if only we could approach each day as a celebration like New Years. I stopped the New Years Resolutions many years ago because I was only fooling myself. I much prefer making periodic goals, reviewing what works, making improvements and moving onward. Happy New Year Mike!!

Very good. Sometimes we think we have learned our lesson but it turns out the lesson is there will always be something ahead of us that we are not prepared for. Knowing that is half the solution! Thanks.
