Lurker – Some People Video

I was playing acoustic guitar in the living room the other night and I was playing a piece that I had written decades ago. My good friend Tom Robinson added some chords to the structure and it became a favorite instrumental of ours called “Lurker”. I think the name fit as the instrumental piece has a LOT of intentional dissonance and it keeps repeating the pattern over an over, though it changes feeling as the piece is played. I thought about doing something with this guitar piece (there were never other instruments, just the guitar parts) and headed up to the studio. In my computer I found a file called “Lurker” and I opened it up not knowing what it was.

As it turned out a couple years ago I had worked on some drum patterns to go with the guitar part – which like other things, got put on the to do list as I went on to other projects. Funny how many simultaneous projects I have going at any given time. I like the feeling the drums added and thought I would record the guitar piece and play with the tune. As I worked with it I naturally started to think about lyrics for it. Then it hit me – the instrumental piece is repetitious as I mentioned and really doesn’t change ( no Chorus, Bridge or Break or alternate chord arrangement, etc.) The post “Some People” is the same way. It was not structured like a normal “commercial” song. (not that I have ever written one of those!)

So I have been working on the two and I thought this is still going to work as a blogger project. I may add other instruments going forward as it still has just the guitar and drum parts and I toyed with a spooky synth sound for the solo.

I also put up a video on my you tube channel with color pictures I have taken over the years. Some black and white pictures courtesy of Tom Robinson.

  1. Nice! I like the dissonant sounds there. It’s nice when you’re able to use scraps.

A woman after my own heart! I often add dissonance and some listeners do not easily appreciate the melodic stretch.
I also enjoy when scraps from different piles create a complete picture. Like one was waiting for the other LOL!

That’s a really nice song. It’s kept quite simple but really very nice and memorable. Some of the dissonant part remind me of an acoustic version of Alice in Chains while during other parts I had to think of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. The synth is priceless as it adds so much atmosphere to the song without drawing too much attention to itself. Great work!

Good to hear! Structurally it is quite simple as you mentioned. Good musical analogies and comparisons. I am into both groups you associated with the tune. You have a great ear!
I am glad you liked the synth part. I couldn’t resist ‘noodling’ with the sound and then almost decided to take it out. I was afraid it would not fit with the guitar parts. Thanks!

Don’t you dare to take out that synth 😉 Honestly, you’d lose so much of the atmosphere that’s created.
Thanks again for sharing that song with us and thank you so much for your compliment 🙂

You convinced me! It is difficult not to second-guess myself. I know I LIKE IT, but that does not mean it will be well received. You are more than welcome and I hope you know I truly appreciate hearing your thoughts.

I know you do appreciate my thoughts, don’t worry 🙂 Of course it’s difficult not to second-guess yourself. But if you know you like it, why change it? Either people like it or they don’t. But in the end it’s your song and you wanted to express something with it – music and lyrics. If you feel that you did then everything’s fine 😉

It is my nature. I know I am not main-stream or commercial and I often stretch connections pretty far. I do not react to comments when there is little understanding. That is why I listen to you. You feel these things and know what is behind them. Even in my limited world, some songs are more popular than others LOL!

It’s got to know you’re doing your thing. Though I never took you to be commercial. This is why you CAN keep that synth in your song becuase you have the freedom to do so. It’s too bad when people don’t understand music that’s different from their musical tunnel vision. I guess I’m just more open to music in general and I also like to experiment a bit with my music (though I’m not any kind of musician :D)

True! I do have the freedom to wander away from traditional song arrangements. Good point!
Don’t be too self critical. I know a lot of performers that I do not consider ‘musicians’ even though they can play their instruments much better than I ever will. Take pride in that openness. I do!

I’m pretty self critical, too much at times. But I’ll keep that in mind, thank you!
