Not That Kind of Man

Are They All Like This?

Never into sports as a kid.  My family moved a lot as I was growing up.  One time I went to three different schools in one year.  Did not make a lot of friends.  But the people I did get a long with tended to be female.  Maybe I was more mature than other boys.  I just never understood why guys act the way they do.  Part inspired and brave, part stupid and unaware.  I have heard many conversations on this topic.  If you listen to ten different women they will have similar complaints regarding their husbands, – boyfriends, bosses, co-workers.

We all know the saying about good guys finishing last.  But that is only the start of it. If our relationships follow many others before us, woman have so much baggage when they think about the men in their lives.  Some of them just made bad choices, but many thought they knew someone honest, kind and sincere, only to find out they are liars and jerks like all the others.

I have never been like all the others.  But so many women I know have been jaded by relationships that end in cruel and bitter melt downs.  As hard as I try in many cases I can’t get past their history.  As if all men are evil creeps in the end – they just act nice at first so they can get what they want.  The true nice guys – we don’t want anything. We see women as people, friends, partners.  We know there are strengths and weaknesses from both sexes, but together we are whole.  We see both sides.  It is hard for many women to look at us without seeing all the other failures in their past.

Those were my thoughts last weekend as I wrote “Not That Kind Of Man”.

All through school the boys would laugh at you

Say things about you they knew weren’t true

Doing what you didn’t want them to do.

Never saw life from your point of view

Men at church looked you up and down

Got way too close when their wives weren’t around

More than eyes always fondling your gown

Then they dare you to make a sound.

The guys you knew no matter where you work

Treated you like a toy and acted like a jerk

Harassing secretaries, waitresses and clerks

As if it was one of their many perks.

I’ve never been one of them

I’m just not that kind of man.

It may take you years to forget them

But I hope one day you can.

One after another they were all the same

Just a different face and another name

Refuse to play so you take all the blame

You could never win if you played their game.

I’ve never been one of them

I’m just not that kind of man.

Soon you’ll look at me and not see them

I’ve never been that kind of man,

Husbands cheat as easily as they lie

Ask you to forgive them as they watch you cry

So many disappointments you no longer try

Curled up in bed and just wanting to die.

I’m just not that kind of man

What you’ve been through I understand.

Soon you’ll look at me and not see them

I’ll never be that kind of man.

I’ll never be that kind of man

I’ll never be that kind of man.

Soon you’ll look at me and not see them.

I’ll never be that kind of man

Thank you! It is like rarely hearing good news on TV. I know there are a lot of good men in the world, it is just that we never hear about them (us!). Thank you for your comment! Greatly appreciated.

  5. Ha, a lot of women go for the bad guys but I think it’s men like you who end up in lasting relationships. Your viewpoint is much appreciated.

So true, Mike. Nice lyrics too. I could say so much about my experiences, but will leave them in the past where they belong. The only good thing about them is that they’ve made me wiser.

Thank you. In the past may not be the best place, unless you have resolved them. The fact that you are wiser means you have come to understanding. You are a lucky one! Many do not know learn from these experiences and the past continues to affect the future. You are in a good place to teach or help others!

I know I’m a little late on this one, but, wow…so true and what you say carries so much weight. Love the lyrics as well. There’s a lot I could say based on my experiences, but you know saying, “let sleeping dogs lay,” so that’s what’s I’ve done. I’ve learned from my experiences and within the last year I’ve realized that not all men are same. It’s kinda the same thing as men thinking all women are bitches who are going to screw them over…or something like that. We’re not all the same. I know I’m different, just like the man I have now is different. The one I have now is truly a good guy. Thanks for sharing these thought-provoking words and the new lyrics!

Never too late and always welcome to join in! Your comments are very helpful. We might think that this is a lesson easy to learn, but that is simply not the case. Our society finds it all to easy to lump everyone similar into a single category. (As if all women think the same way LOL!) It takes a bit of courage and open mindedness to understand we often hear about the ‘sensational’, but they do not reflect the thoughts or positions of most people. These stories are NOT about the majority. I am glad you have a good guy and thankful you have learned to appreciate him. Thank you.

I’m sure you do! Btw…did your daughter go to a goo goo dolls show this summer? This was their BEST tour ever and I mean ever! Lots of sold out venues and the boys are sober and happy and on fire! Being at that show was like a party. Tribe Society and Collective Soul opened for them. Tribe Society is awesome and Collective Soul rocked! I am so much in the present moment that all my crap disappears, and it feels amazing. It’s like I’m on an elevated high that lasts for hours. I become the experience; it was fantastic! I did have an issue; the guy behind me wanted me to sit down, well that was not going to happen. I heard him yelling and I ignored him; he poured his beer on my seat. Now I didn’t know this because I was standing, but the couple next to me told me. It mainly went through the seat and was on the floor. At that point he had left for something, so I reported him to security. When he returned they spoke to him and his wife was mortified. I turned around and I told him if you have a problem with me standing, then you are going to have a problem all night, because I will be standing all night and security said I could. And I said I reported you and told them the shit you pulled. He told security he wasn’t drinking a beer! He and his wife starting fighting and left the show. I am finding that these days people aren’t standing like they used to. Do you remember how we used to stand on the chairs many years ago? When I went to see Lana Del Rey two girls behind me kept screaming to sit down. I ignored them, but I hate that I may have to deal with this at a concert. The people next to me were like You go girl! It’s a concert, not a funeral! Anyway, amazing night and I can’t wait to go again next summer! Johnny is having a baby girl in December!

I do not think she got the chance to see them. I also understand the wonderful feeling you get from watching a performance that inspires your soul.
I also have to say that while I appreciate the fun people have and want to stand and dance, scream or yell in excitement, as I have gotten older I can not stand for the entire performance. I also want to see the stage effects and all the performers. I paid as much as the person in front of me. While I would not tell them to sit down or pour beer in their seat, (I am not that kind of man LOL) I would hope that they consider the ‘old guys’ behind them. It is not a funeral and it should be felt and enjoyed.

I see your point. My dad says the same thing. And my friend doesn’t stand because she says it’s uncomfortable. But I don’t know if I could sit through a show; maybe I could just do some of the really good songs! My mom is 73 and she just saw Garth Brooks and she stood the whole time!

good. I did not mean to offend. If I was performing on stage I would LOVE to see fans like you in the audience really enjoying themselves. Good for your mom! How cool.

No offense taken:) Yea I always think the performer is happy to see people standing and singing. I even saw him tell the people in the front to get up, which is interesting because they paid a couple of hundred dollars for their seats and they are just sitting in them, imagine;)

Ha! Good point. The true fans might not be able to afford those seats. …… but the ones that can might not be as enthusiastic as others! Lumps on a log! Lol
