What was your favorite subject in school?

Unfortunately for me, I changed schools often. So that depended on how good the teacher was in that particular subject.

History! It fascinated me. Also in grade 12, really liked math because, like you – the teacher – he was a great guy.

  7. Writing! Whenever the assignment involved creative writing, I devoured it. Back then, it was easy to be creative and have fun. But corporate life nearly destroyed that love until I finally gave it up. The paycheck wasn’t worth as much as my sanity – and restoring what was all but lost from the monotony.

Excellent. I like the way writing consumed you. The corporate life can eat into anything. As a musician, music is fun, until you get paid to do it. Then like anything else, it is a job! Keep writing!

Instead of waiting and sitting on your ass waiting for a favourite subject to seduce you, why can’t you be the directive principle in all subjects, and draw from each subject what will support Life and living? Each and every subject is in a way, a reflection of the Life that is living in this physical existence, it’s a mirror reflection of ourselves, our attitudes to each subject in school even.

In grade school it is important for students to be shown important studies. This allows students to choose what courses meet their interests and needs. Thank you so much for your comments!

Music was a natural favorite subject until a death in my family as a teenager brought out the history detective in me. Then I graduated with a BS in Social Studies. I had a very charismatic high school teacher and then many professors who were just as charismatic from my college years at OCU. History is as much a passion for me as music always was in my life.

That sounds quite familiar. I wake up hearing music, I go to bed hearing music, but it is all in my head! Like you, it always has been. There is so much math in music that the two are paired studies in my opinion. You can’t have one with the out the other!

Interesting! That is something that just isn’t taught anymore. Generally, it is only French or Spanish that are offered at school.

Latin is an unusual choice but dead languages have their fascination. In my days as an altar boy at church, we used to say mass in Latin. Most people didn’t know what it meant but they repeated it anyway.
It is the root of many languages and opens the gate to ancient history. Good luck!

I agree. I would sometimes move three times in one school year. You never knew what subject they were studying at any moment … you may have missed it or done it twice! It was difficult to build relationships with teachers as well, so that did not encourage a great learning environment.

You know that makes so much sense about the teachers… I have always wondered at how other folks can actually remember teachers from all the way back in elementary… you just answered something I hadn’t ever considered… they always moved me to a new foster home like clockwork, right before the quarterly tests…

It all makes sense from a distance doesn’t it lol! And I was born later in the year so I was always a small kid. A small kid in a new school. No friends. I didn’t remember anybody’s name.
Moving like that for any reason takes its toll. Thanks again!

History is wonderful. I do have a difficulty with it because I simply can’t remember names and dates from moving so much as a kid. But I do understand stories. And the lessons from those stories live for generations to come. Thank you for your comment I really appreciate the reminder that history is a story.

  37. Math, until I got to college, where the classes were deeply awful. Not surprising perhaps, because I went to a liberal arts college, and we were forced to use the awful book written by the head of the department. Unfortunately, that steered me away from math, which I probably would have enjoyed. I ended up studying economics, which uses a lot of math.

Yes, History was my favorite subject. Irrespective of who was teaching I would love History. Our studies were heavily on Indian history but I wish had studied History in more depth and wide scope.
This fascination has led me to start my own blog with focus on Pacific migration and New Zealand history.
