What was your favorite subject in school?

Unfortunately for me, I changed schools often. So that depended on how good the teacher was in that particular subject.

I agree midimike. My enjoyment of subjects was greatly influenced by the teachers, so I liked English most until I was 15, then a French teacher really got me excited about the language so much I ended up doing a degree in it! Ironically, I ran into her in my hometown a few years ago and told her I wasn’t sure where my life was going so I was considering doing teacher training to become a French teacher – and she said one word: “Don’t!”.

I loved school and I enjoyed learning. Each year was different. I disliked subjects because of the teacher. One hit me with a ruler when I wasn’t paying attention during geography. Another spit often and made that sound you often hear before someone sits. That was government. So it seems my least favorite subject was social studies. I loved to read and enjoyed math. I taught my peers in the neighborhood when we played school. I became a teacher the year I graduated from college and I married the love of my life 2 months before my first day as a teacher. I love school.

History I will agree with you. For my experience in school, gym class was no fun at all. I was always the youngest and the smallest in every school that I went to. So I was the subject of a lot of physical activity that was not necessarily healthy. I am glad you had a different experience!

I am Italian and my favourite subject was English. Later on I studied foreign languages and literature. Despite the importance of having a native speaker teacher, in school the most important seems to be: to have a teacher that connects with the pupils. Change my mind after all the comments I read that just say this 🙂

We turn this into simple yes or no, like this don’t like that. But in reality teachers have an overwhelming challenge because each student is different. My situation when I moved into each new school was different than the classmates already there. It is a miracle when any teacher can address 30 to 40 different students and connect with each one. It does not mean connections are impossible and it does not mean connections are easy. It just means that many students depend on that connection, and won’t know it for years to come. I really appreciate your attitude and your comment.

Teacher has a huge factor in learning things at school. As for me, I would always love Sports because we go out and play at times. But most of the time, it always depended on how interesting and engaging the teacher is/was.

As a teacher, it can be challenging keeping the pupils engaged. I discovered the secret is to maintain a balance between learning time and play times. If children are scared of their teacher, it will be hard to learn.

Challenging is an understatement! There are so many concerns not just in the classroom but in the student’s home life. It is difficult to grab a student’s attention when there are needs at home that remain invisible. There are many ways to teach. And playing games is the most important and appreciated one. Thank you for your attitude and understanding. I appreciate your comments too!

I was a religion and morality teacher for 5 years and for most students in the Catholic school I worked at, these subjects are the most boring of all 😂. I had my fair share of challenges with keeping my students engaged, but what I did was to befriend them (with boundaries of course) then I gained their respect and made them listen to me until they became interested. My first year of teaching was when I was 20 and taught 9th graders (15 to 18 years old). Many came from broken families so I figured they needed a friend to listen to them.

You headed some extreme challenges well. And understand my point I guess. For some the path is fairly long. Bad student, difficult student, challenging student, underfed student, abused student, ……… they are all in there. Yes, there are bad students. For many different reasons.
Often the student is not capable of understanding their actions or their reactions. They are dealing with things way beyond their age. Teachers are adults, and can decide how they respond. Doesn’t make it easy, doesn’t make it fun.

      • Teachers are too often demonized for not being good enough. I just wanted to defend the profession. Sometimes, more often than we want to believe, students are a major problem. Teachers are people, not miracle workers, and I am going to say that most of the time the odds are stacked against the teacher from the beginning.

I wasn’t even given paper. No computers or tablets but also no paper. How successful was I supposed to be with no paper? (I used my own money to supply my classroom with paper and my student test scores were exactly where they needed to be. Imagine if I had been set up for success?)

I taught world history. I loved it. I tried to get my students to love it. I succeeded in that with many but not all. Just because I didn’t get all students to love it doesn’t mean I’m not a good teacher. I think that sometimes we need to change how we think about teachers who didn’t reach us. (And sometimes they were just objectively bad teachers.)

It is hard to argue with that. The challenges on teaching cannot be understated though. Many teachers were put in a math class when they were trained on physical therapy. Or they teach French when they are a math teacher. But unfortunately the challenge is still there and the student’s needs are real. Thanks for the visit!
