I went searching for years to learn the important things in life.
Some spent in luxury, too many were spent in strife.
Truly believing if I could just find the right questions
Throughout all of humanity, someone would surely know.

What happens after death, are we all alone?
The answers were never written in stone.
What is the real difference between love and faith?
Is it too late with three out at the bottom of the eighth?

The Answer Might Be 42
But it never was about that.
Finding neither question or answer
Nor even a wise old sage or wizard.

To learn how to listen I sought out musicians
To know what is real I studied magicians.
Accountants I’ve met could never measure true cost.
Preparing for challenge I drank with those who have lost.

To see both sides I closely examined the moon.
You can see the ground better from a hot air balloon.
Can’t understand demons if you always talk to saints.
What is freedom if you’ve never known restraints?

The Answer Might Be 42
But it was never about that.
The secret of life is not found in questions
Better served by learning whom to ask.

Thinking of the times we were both in school
They said I was an idiot and called you a fool.
In high school you created a vaccine that kept thousands alive
When I was bored I solved problems for the first warp drive.

One time I saw a kid push you around
I thought you would never hit the ground.
I went over to help you up and when I reached out a hand
With a smile you said. “Bodies in motion. Now I understand’.

In class I was asked for money and I had to refuse
That week I came home with cuts and a bruise.
Forget the bedside manners and dispense with the charm
That’s what you meant when you would yell, ‘First, do no harm’.

Bodies In Motion pushed in so many different ways.
Bodies In Motion simply can’t be measured in days.

Bullies and jerks are really nothing new
Feels like so many but there’s only just a few.
Beauties and brats seem to roam free across the range
They appear successful but soon that will also change.

Bodies In Motion pushed in so many different ways.
Bodies In Motion simply can’t be measured in days.

Thinking of the times we were both in school
They said I was an idiot and called you a fool.
In high school you created a vaccine that kept thousands alive
When I was bored I solved problems for the first warp drive.

Every musician hits a wrong note
You just try to do it at the right time.
The lyrics might ramble and get lost
You can be sure they end with a rhyme.

Dress it up in lights and fantasy
Fill it with glitter-truths and noble lies.
Pretty poems form a pleasant jingle
Packaged with a bow and ribbon ties.

Beautiful From A Distance
We desire what we see.
And only From A Distance
It’s easy to believe.

What seemed warm and delightful
Is now turned bitter and freezing cold.
It only happens when you get too close
Not sure I always knew that or was told.

Then you learn it’s a sale and not a gift
No surprise now they expect you to pay.
Payments for years turn into a lifetime
For the shiny bobble you’ll just throw away.

Beautiful From A Distance
Until you hand them your pay.
Beautiful From A Distance
You’ll just throw it away.

Every musician hits a wrong note
You just try to do it at the right time.
The lyrics might ramble and get lost
You can be sure they end with a rhyme.

Dress it up in lights and fantasy
Fill it with glitter-truths and noble lies.
Pretty poems form a pleasant jingle
Packaged with a bow and ribbon ties.

Beautiful From A Distance

Beautiful From A Distance
You just threw it away.

I’m feeling a little analog and unnecessary
Like Unused Words in a lost dictionary.
Not forgotten but so unimportant
A millionaire who never spent his fortune.

Worthless as a solar panel on a rainy day
A scarecrow that can’t make birds fly away.
The star of the show that forgot his lines
Lost with no direction in a field of mines.

The only one still listening on the telephone
The circus clown that wants to be alone.
Every day everyone feels the same
You look and look and never find the pain.

Unused Words become a forgotten language
Only the ancient and the wise will recall.
No one else will ever hear for no one will speak
Images fade in both the strong and the weak.

It seems I’m just a handle without a door
Without knowing what I’m searching for.
A fantastic painter but I forgot my brush
Left in a hurry but I forgot to rush.

Unused Words become a forgotten language
Only the ancient and the wise will recall.
No one else will ever hear for no one will speak
Images fade in both the strong and the weak.

A bit like a ticket taker on the last show
Or a great teacher students will never know.
Best-selling writer who’ll never publish a book
A telescope to the stars but no one will look.

It’s not like I planned it
Much of life is under handed
I didn’t really understand it.
And all of it demanded.
The rest of my life branded
My soul reprimanded
Heart and thoughts now commanded
Hope forever abandoned.

Not like I didn’t have a choice
When I needed it I lost my voice.
The true cost is not on the invoice
But everyone loves their toys.
There are those who will rejoice
Not just women or their boys
Their words thick and moist
It is the silence that destroys.

My Mistake
And I made it so long ago.
My Mistake
Took me this long to know.

Passions and hope and dreams
I made them all routine
Rather leave than make a scene
Hide behind another machine.
Standing tall and in between
Excuses and lies on a trampoline
Drinking cool-aid from a canteen
Pretending what I did wasn’t mean.

My Mistake
And I made it so long ago.
My Mistake
Took me this long to know.

Summer sun setting on one hand
The winter moon rising on the other.
Watching as my father’s son
Is told of the loss of his brother.

Forces built up with only one end
And the end will always come.
More dreams lost than can be counted
Began with the Pounding of a Drum.

We can no longer make sense of the world.
We can’t protect loved ones,
It has begun
Hear the Pounding of the Drum.

There is no comprehension
No mere words could ever describe.
There is no excuse or reason
In a righteous man’s diatribe.

Left standing in a different world
So much life just swept away.
The worst pain is not physical
Like the memories from today.

We can no longer make sense of the world.
We can’t protect loved ones,
It had begun long ago it is true
The Pounding of the Drum now heard from Beirut.

Summer sun setting on one hand
The winter moon rising on the other.
Watching as my father’s son
Is told of the loss of his brother.

Forces built up with only one end
And the end will always come.
More dreams lost than can be counted
Began with the Pounding of a Drum.

I now see the infinite wisdom here.
God made us in his image and likeness
So we are told.
Angels are white and robed in gold

There are demons and that’s for sure.
Tempting us toward an unholy path
To steal your heart.
Man questioned how he might tell them apart

So he made one red, and another black.
Colors of hair and eyes and some stand tall
Now you can see.
The faces that belong here with thee

But what for the blind that cannot know
The wisdom of the lord from above?
To save them too.
Languages were created no one knew

It is so simple as to be part of my face
We just need a color-guided human race.
How thoughtful to make it so well known
Good and evil separated by the color shown

Your enemy is also made in his image.
And feels exactly the same way you do
Love conquers all.
As another peaceful day begins to fall

The Mighty Plan Part 2

Some will listen to you
But you will never talk.
They’d rather play games
In circles made of chalk.

If they thought about it twice
It would have been clear right then.
But faced with the same choices
They’ll make the same decision again.

It wasn’t difficult
I didn’t need a guide
I only had to ask
To know who you were inside.

And that’s when I stood up and laughed,
“I completely understand”.
She said “I don’t want to be your woman,
But I’d love to Be Your Man”.

Nobody thinks life is simple
But it would be nice to get a break.
Give everyone a fair chance
And learn from your mistakes.

It doesn’t take a genius
To know when you are in love.
For me it was your gentle touch
And everything you‘re made of.

And that’s when I stood up and laughed,
“I completely understand”.
When she said “I don’t want to be your woman,
But I’d love to Be Your Man”.

Earlier I posted a poem (although poems and lyrics are often interchangeable with me) called “The Next Step”: https://midimike.com/2020/06/22/the-next-step/

This shuffle will take a while to get used to. Really, there is no groove here. No comedic relief either, but I do like the strangeness of it. How about that for an intro?!!

The recording was simple and there is a lot of open space in this one that makes most listeners a little uncomfortable. I played my Ibanez 6 string electric guitar and used effects from my PC after the recording to get the delay and chorus effects. I created the MIDI drums to match the odd beat in the guitar strums. After laying down a simple bass guitar track using computer plug-ins and the song is almost done.

The Next Step by MSK

This is another one of my poems I pulled out of the archives recently. Written back on April 2nd, 1984 (what a good year!) and it has a few lines I like.

I want you to stay
For the moments that last forever
Like seasons that always change.

Not to change you
But to watch you grow.
Not to hold you
Or to let you go.

It’s too late to cry
Much too long since you went away
Sometimes you just can’t look back.

Don’t need to know why
Something beautiful goes the wrong way
But you can never go back

Not to change you
But to watch you grow.
Not to hold you
Or to let you go.

I want you to stay
For the moments that last forever
Like seasons that always change.
