As many of you know, I am no longer young. I was born in the early 1950’s, and have seen a number of changes. Don’t worry, I am not going to give you a history lesson (though frankly, for many in the US a history lesson is desperately needed). I try not to get opinionated or political in my posts, but it does happen from time to time.

Back then, we used to aspire to be a doctor, an astronaut, judge or even president. These were honorable positions. I considered running for local office and felt a life of civil service was the best thing I could do for my country. My last name is Kennedy. After they shot President John F Kennedy and then his brother, Bobby Kennedy, I decided to take another path.

Growing up in those times – our political leaders were often looked at as heroes. We have a long history of presidents and elected officials not only solving the crisis or emergencies of the time, but they also guided or encouraged honor, civility, fairness and the American way of life. Through most of my adult political life I considered myself to be an Independent. I would vote for the right person for the job (male, female, any political party, experienced (old) or not) that I thought had good ideas and would be good for the community or the country as a whole.

This is no longer possible.

One of the first threats I saw to democracy was the emergence of what I call ‘single issue politics’. Today – whether it is from the religious-right demanding everyone follow their beliefs, to gun manufacturers’ desire to sell assault weapons designed for war to every teacher, criminal and concerned citizen on the planet as the only solution to ‘keep us safe’, we see the few wanting to RULE the many.

For politicans that are so focused on ONE issue, they will do anything to achieve their goals; lie, cheat, manipulate the truth – whatever it takes. Ironically, the religious forces consider this to be the ‘crusade of their time’ and feel justified to break all the rules they say they live by to acheive their higher purpose. They have little concern about any of the important issues like the environment, education, international relationships, healthcare and the list goes on.

Many threats facing this county we cannot even see. We have gone beyond the ‘fake news’ of the last decade to a total collapse of truth from our leaders and politicians. Rationalizing that all politicians ‘spin’ their side of the issue, today they justify putting their ‘spin on steroids’ and have no problem directly lying about anything to fit their goals. Even when they know the facts and everyone else can verify their story is not true at all they just double or triple-down and shout at anyone that does not agree.

I want to start a citizen movement that I call the “We Told You So” campaign.

I am older now and thrilled to have gained a small following of great bloggers over the last few years, but this post will not go viral. My ideas are big, but my voice is small. You might feel the same way, even if you have a much larger audience. We often feel separated or unconnected from others, wondering if we are the only ones concerned about a particular issue.

The idea behind the “We Told You So” campaign is to highlight serious examples of these political lies. There is no other way to say it. They are not simply wrong or misspoken – they outright lie to the American public for media generated revenue or political points.

    Topics – Headlines:

Man-made climate change and global warming
For the last 50 years we’ve heard the warnings ridiculed by climate deniers, but now it is undeniable.

Cannabis safety and legality
The original weaponization of the justice department. (Marijuana connection to racial history. Then it was used against Viet Nam anti-war protestors. Criminal record – can’t vote!

Abortion, IVF and contraceptives
The real threat from single-issue politicians. Only one thing matters and all is ‘fair’ in war.

Subsidizing the fossil fuel industry
The oil and gas industry has known for decades they are destroying the planet but continue crushing green efforts and renewable energy options.

2020 was the fairest, freest and most secure election. No major fraud.
No matter how many times five people say it was rigged. Trump just lost.

Voter restriction and gerrymandering
If you can’t win on your ideas, cheat! I propose we use boundaries already established – Zip Codes!

M&Ms are not gay
But your sports buddy or your older brother might be.

Gas stoves the ‘government wants to take away’
I don’t remember people complaining when they replaced coal home-heating. But the coal and delivery industries did.

Trickle-Down Economics
How the rich get richer. You are voting to give the wealthy an advantage over workers, military and the disabled.

Slavery was not the reason for the Civil War
Read confederate state constitutions from the time. They come right out and say it.

The border is an urgent crisis that needs to be solved now!
Until Trump decides it is better to keep a ‘win’ away from Biden and then use it to blame Democrats for the border crisis through the 2024 campaign.

Corporate welfare’s true cost
Tax loop holes that big corporations lobbied with millions of dollars to reduce their tax liability to $0.00….. Then they pay workers less than a living wage and the tax-payers foot the bill when that paycheck is not enough for emergencies. And society blames the workers!

Covid 19 and vaccines
Millions died, but far too many were from states with anti-vaccination pushes from those claiming restrictions required by a pandemic were nothing more than a violation of their rights.

If you know someone that does not vote often or not at all, or someone that seems to be confused by all the conflicting hype I suggest the following; pick a few of the topics above and say, “What do the following things have in common?”

The answer is too many of our elected officials have lied to get your vote or trick you in to supporting unpopular laws. Why keep voting for anyone if they lie to you about very important (and often very emotional) issues?

Join Democrats, Independents and what’s left of the Republican Party we knew to defend democracy, and continue Biden’s bipartisan success for the next four years by giving him a large enough majority so we can replace the single-issue and media grabbing politicians to get things done.

MIDIMike

This was just a fun song in so many ways.  National news has always been a good source for ideas and material and Cut the Fat takes it all and smashes it into a kaleidoscope of political slogans to irrational fears.  In the recording I got everyone including neighbors, my kids and other relatives to sing and read news sections.  My wife Ellen did a quick run on the vocals to get a feel of the timing.  We never recorded another take.

I am usually silent and often in the minority, but here is what I say.

Questions for a few friends.

I have written in earlier posts about my experience with the Ohio Medical Marijuana program, so I wanted to make an easy outline to date.

Your application for a medical card in Ohio has to be approved by a certified state doctor. There are a limited number of them as most doctors do not want to touch cannibals until federally legalized or decriminalized to some extent. You have to pay to register for the card and then pay to see the certified doctor – wherever they are in the state. Each year you have to pay to renew your Ohio card. Additional doctor visits may be required.

There are very few dispensaries currently open for business and fewer growers. The numbers are strictly limited, but most of the dispensaries are not open yet because the growers do not have enough ‘medicine’ to go around.

Once harvested it must go through testing and approval which also costs money.

Make no mistake; this is a money making business every step of the way.

Everyone that handles this process must operate with cash. The laws to make marijuana a Schedule 1 narcotic in the US was politically motivated and intentionally used as a weapon against ‘dissidents’ and other groups considered unfriendly. Because it is still a Schedule 1 narcotic it is a federal offense to ‘launder’ drug money. Banks are even prohibited from accepting legal monies because they are federally insured. Same with credit cards.

That means you have to use cash (or other versions like debit cards and pay-pal in some cases). You are buying medicine but still feel treated like a criminal.

Prices are very high – I have been told Ohio is the most expensive state to purchase medical marijuana. Part of this is because not all the growers are on-line and harvesting and that opens up to supply and demand rules. Few have it so they can raise the price up to any point people will still pay. Part of it is because EVERYONE has to get a cut of the profit. Each step in the process costs a little bit here – a little more there. All for something I could grow at home ……………………………………… but no. The Ohio laws stop us from doing that.

We can not smoke ‘plant material’ as the industry likes to call it. You have to use a vape pen with a ceramic chamber to heat up the marijuana to the right temperature so as not to burn the plant material but to ‘toast’ it enough to release the THC or CBD. That means you have to buy a device just for this. Another cost.

Not ideal for patients and care providers but at least I can cross buying marijuana legally off my bucket list!

Can building “the beautiful wall” protect us from hurricanes crossing our borders?

Will the wall be high enough to stop tornadoes?

Is it long enough to stop the floods or forest fires?

Should it be smart enough to keep in the rain and prevent droughts?

Fake News = Fake Emergency.

Sure enough, as the years passed the allergies and reactions changed. Some triggers no longer caused days of panicked suffocation brought on by these asthma attacks. A number of the allergens would start to cause breathing problems but I learned if I could remove myself from the environment or place myself in a calming mental state and focus on breathing properly I could stop the attacks from getting worse.

Eventually I reached a point where the severe attacks were rare. I could manage to do most of the things I needed to do and new friends had no idea that I suffered from bronchial asthma. As these things shifted I started to have sneezing fits in the place of attacks. I would walk into a room or go outside and breathe in the cold/hot air and start sneezing out of control. It was not unusual to sneeze 30 – 40 times in a row. Sneezing five times in rapid succession is exhausting. By the time I hit 30 I was helpless. My body temperature would raise dramatically and I would break out in a heavy sweat. Now, even those symptoms are gone.

Nowadays there is politics in everything. There was back when I was born, too. Politicians decided to make possession and use of marijuana a crime similar to use of narcotics and psychotropic based drugs. This allowed US law enforcement agencies to arrest and imprison ‘specific groups of radicals and dissidents’ who were known to use marijuana. In my pursuit of life, liberty and health, I was made a criminal by my own government for using something in my own home that I could grow in my back yard! Marijuana has been used throughout human history and there is no evidence based reason for a Schedule 1 classified drug. This year the WHO (World Health Organization) suggested rescheduling use of marijuana to delete its schedule 1 classification. https://www.icci.science/data/files/ECDDcannabisoutcome.pdf

My state of Ohio passed a medical marijuana law a couple years ago. You are required to be approved for a number of medical conditions by select certified doctors in the state. Once approved you will be issued a medical marijuana card that can be used in Ohio. I applied for the card and easily qualified for intractable pain. Late last year the first dispensary opened in Ohio. There are no dispensaries anywhere near me and the program is way behind schedule.

As a young adult I thought marijuana would be legalized very soon. I kept thinking this as I saw friends, family, classmates, teachers and every class of people destroyed by alcohol, sleeping pills, tobacco, sugar, salt and a million other things that seemed far more dangerous and showed little or no benefits. Years went on and no change in political attitudes, though there was a clear change in social views. I would just like to be able to use marijuana as a medication and no longer be a criminal by the time I die.

Then I would like to see the thousands of people with criminal records for non-violent use be freed and their records expunged. If it is not asking too much, I would like my country’s politicians to be governed by facts, science and compromise for the common good. I may not live to see that one.

The End of the Road

It is difficult to live in a world

Where those in power commit as many crimes in the name of faith as the poor in the name of survival.  The powerful might be among the poor in church but they don’t cross paths in the prisons or become enslaved in debt.

It is difficult to live in a world

Built on privilege and inherited blessings that can last through the ages. Maybe at some point your ancestors did something right and earned – or stole – the fortunes you rely on.  It is frightening to think how that power can be wielded with malice.  If absolute power corrupts absolutely, imagine the impact of guaranteed absolute power your entire life.

It is difficult to live in a world

That allows greed and profit to drive one amazing creature after the other to extinction.  Not so far away now there is a real possibility we will create mankind’s own doom.  Weapons are easily financed.  The world quickly filled with needy and desperate people living in cities of ash and poisoned air, but we will be the rulers of it all.

It is difficult to live in a world

You can only survive by closing your eyes and pretending ignorance is bliss.  Knowledge is spreading and more accessible but even at this rate there is no way to keep up with propaganda, lies and distortions manufactured so easily today.  Trust no one.  Believe no one.  Agree with no one.  The powerful have won again, and will be rulers of it all.

Intelligence is not the answer,

Though wisdom certainly is.

I might be waiting for the cows to come home

But I don’t have time for this.

It doesn’t take a genius to know,

Facts are the same for everyone.

That doesn’t mean it’s all black and white

Or can be changed with a gun.

It’s often a matter of perspective.

And that makes it hard to understand.

Why someone turns grey into black or white

Without experiences of the other man.

If you have been supported by faith

Then religion can be your guiding hand.

Survive Jihads, Inquisitions and pedophile priests

You might begin to feel nothing but hate.

The police are always there to serve,

And get you home safe at night.

In my neighborhood it ain’t like that at all

So it’s safer to take your chances and run.

Intelligence is not the answer,

Though wisdom certainly is.

I might be waiting for the cows to come home

But I don’t have time for this.

All the experts seem so smart,

Until you hear from the others.

Sooner or later we have to realize

It’s time to stop killing our brothers.

Smart people become rich people,

Their answers bring cash and fame.

The poorest will always be poor; just look at them.

There’s no one else to blame.

She looks so happy

From the outside, many of us do.

Sure and in control

Man, I wish that were true.

For every question

So sure we have all the answers.

Act as if we’re immune

To weakness, disease and cancers.

He stands there so calm.

No sign that he’s ready to explode.

Sleeves rolled up: digs in

This close to just running down the road.

There is no training for this.

Won’t find it on utube or Internet search.

There is no training for this.

No help from lawyers, police or church.

For every question

So sure we have all the answers.

Talk as if we’re not human

Just crazy, drugged up dancers.

Letter 307

On-street-parking.  I know I will get a lot of kick-back for this one but I think we should end on-street-parking.  Even in residential and business districts.  Safety issues, snow clearance, traffic flow, and maintenance costs come to mind immediately.  I know many areas do not have much parking space for residents and there are more multiple car families than in the past.  Businesses also benefit if customers can park right in front of their stores.  But I am not sure this is worth blocking local traffic including emergency vehicles, utility companies, snow plows and the like in areas easily affected by weather, accidents, building fires and a host of other challenges.

Still, if we are planning a city or community, let’s plan on eliminating this practice entirely.  Just think how much this would ease congestion, improve safety, reduce city road maintenance costs, allow for emergency vehicles and unexpected weather or unusual events and improve the look and health of our streets and neighborhoods.

Let me know what you think.  What would you suggest to your city planners?
